Bangkok's first World Comedy Film Festival is promising slapstick, madcap, satire, rom-coms, and funny films about food and weddings. Although more than 50 movies and shorts from many countries are supposed to be represented, there's not too much information on the website yet, so keep checking. Originally scheduled for late April, the festival will run from June 10 to June 16.
For sure, there will be three films featuring Jack Neo, the Singaporean writer, director and actor. He will also be there in person along with William Shatner of Star Trek fame (and its parodies) and US actors Eric Roberts and Brittany Daniel. Another recent Singaporean romantic comedy, The Wedding Game, is also scheduled. And dating back to the 1950s, ten Thai comedies will be screened (surely at least some of them will have English subtitles?). Silent Wedding from Romania, Singh is Kinng from India, The Hammer from the United States will be among the other selections.
June 11 will be the day for for four live stand-up comedians. Doesn't look like any Thais will be performing, but there will be a foreigner who lives in Thailand, Chris Delivery. A Korean-American female stand-up--make that "single Asian female"-- Tina Kim, looks promising too.
Although there's still little information about the program, it is being organized by Chalida Uabumrungjit of the Thai Film Foundation and the festival gets funding from the Tourist Authority of Thailand and corporate sponsors, so expect an interesting selection an
