Remember when Miss Cast Away & the Island Girls came out, and I told you it would usher in a new era of Eric Roberts? And you didn't believe me? Well, it's happening. The LA Daily News is reporting that Mr. Roberts has just been cast as a Mafia Kingpin in the new Batman sequel entitled The Dark Knight. He begins work in June.

This is just one of many new projects for Eric, father of burgeoning star Emma Roberts and brother of America's Sweetheart Julia Roberts. He is also hustling it hardcore in the NBC series Heroes; he has a permanent gig on Showtime's The L Word, and this June his Hallmark Channel presentation Pandemic will premiere.

Eric Roberts hasn't stopped working since his illustrious turn as Paul Snider in 1983's Star 80. In 1985, Runaway Train won him an Oscar nomination. But he lost out to Don Ameche for Cocoon, "Once they gave my Oscar to the wrong person, I called my agent and said, 'From now on if there's one good thing about a project, I'll do it.' If the character is good, I'll do it. If the director is good, I'll do it. If the location is good, I'll do it."

Since then, he's hit the ground running. And it just now seems as if he's hitting that critical second wind, which he accredits to a strong work ethic. "I don't stop working. I'm a workaholic. I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm too overexposed to ever be a superstar, so I'm happy to be a working actor every day,"

Look for Eric Robert in theaters on July 18th, 2008. That's when The Dark Knight will be swinging into theaters!

Batman on Film posted a piece confirming that Eric Roberts will indeed have a role in the upcoming Batman Begins 2 aka Dark Knight. Quote:
"I’m a Mafioso in THE DARK KNIGHT and I haven’t seen the script; all I’ve seen is the pages they sent me to audition. It’s all very hush hush. We’re going to be shooting in Chicago and London. I love Christian Bale what an actor. I have interactions with both Heath Ledger and Christian Bale and I am a bad guy. It was thanks to HEROES that I started to get this new found appreciation for the comic book genre.”
Also be sure to read our sit down with Christian Bale where he talks Batman! As a follow up to the blockbuster "Batman Begins", Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Dark Knight", written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.
Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. Production is set to begin on "The Dark Knight" in early 2007.

Eric Roberts mobs up for 'The Dark Knight'

We knew it was only a matter of time before one of the biggest little roles for the upcoming Batman sequel The Dark Knight.

The word coming from The Daily News is that Eric Roberts has landed the role of a Mafia Kingpin and if you follow the comics at all, you should know that Kingpin goes by the name of Sal Maroni. Maroni is the character who throws that tasty acid in the face of Harvey Dent creating my personal favorite Batman villain Two-Face.

You have to figure that this role will be a pretty big deal for the flick considering it will most likely help develop the third movie in the renewed franchise. There is something to loveable about Eric Roberts, he can always play the sleaziest not a very nice person imaginable and make you want to spit on him if you see him walking down the street, now THAT's Acting!
